The Ripple

Something in the Bible breaks my heart every time I read it.

There was a young child named Mephibosheth. He was King Saul’s grandson. Saul made a few intentional mistakes and died in battle. Once his family heard about it, they fled for cover.

Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, was being carried by his nurse, and while they were fleeing, his nurse dropped him, thus causing his feet to be immobilized.

Saul’s decisions early in life caused him to take a path that wasn’t the best for him or his family. What he chose didn’t only affect him.
Ultimately, his decisions caused a ripple that affected those who hadn’t been born yet.

Our sphere of influence is immeasurable. What we do today will affect generations years from now.

Everything we do will extend beyond the point of impact. Its effects will ripple out over time.

What are we doing now, and how will it affect not only our children but our grandchildren and beyond?

The Bible talks about leaving an inheritance for our children. The word inheritance is also interpreted as possess, distribute, and heritage.

Now, Dave Ramsey might disagree with this, but the word inheritance may not mean anything about money. At least, I couldn’t find anything about it from this verse. By the way, it’s Proverbs 13:22.

The word where it’s interpreted as heritage is in Psalms 119:111, where the writer said that testimonies are a heritage.

I want to distribute to my children more than earthly possessions. I hope to leave a good name, good memories, a good work ethic, and a love for God. And maybe a modest Roth 401k or IRA.

But what can we distribute to our children besides money or property? What can we choose to ripple out over time? How will our decisions affect them?

What will their heritage be?

to those in the here and now,
