Recently, Son #3 was lying on the floor underneath a canopy of toys suspended from two flexible crisscrossed arms that arced from one side of the play mat to the other.
One of those toys had a bell inside that would jingle with the slightest touch, but he wasn’t aware of it. He discovered it by accident.
He would look to the kitchen where Momma was busy preparing a meal. He would notice her moving back and forth, and he would swing his arm up and down.
In doing so, he would periodically hit the toy with the bell inside. It would jingle, and he would look around for the noise. Finally, he swung his arm while he looked at the toys and hit the one with the bell inside. He stared it down.
“What in the world?” he thought. “What is this magic?”
He stared at it for some time, then intentionally swung his arm to hit it. Then he grabbed at it. The only finger that found its mark was his pinky finger. This toy had a handle at the end of it. He held onto it with his pinky. Then he shook it.
He discovered that he could cause something intentionally. Granted, he may not have fully realized it, but he has learned it nonetheless. He repeated the action several more times within ten minutes.
It’s so fascinating to watch babies grow. I enjoy watching them learn and interact with things and the people around them. Son #3 has found his voice and is babbling away nonstop.
He loves getting hugs and kisses from his brothers. He’ll smile when they talk to him. He’ll sit in his swing and watch as they play and follow them with his eyes as they run around the room. He’ll laugh at Momma and me when we make silly noises.
It’s the little things – the seemingly insignificant things that bring so much joy. Take notice of them.
Soon, they will be gone.
The time will come when you will wish you had noticed them a little more.
to the temporary,
– Caleb
