The Son

They didn’t know much about having children – he would be their first. Every experience was new. The first visit to the doctor solidified their assumption that the sickness she was experiencing during a certain part of the day was not contagious or life-threatening.

The doctor in the country clinic confirmed it. She walked in and said, “You are, without a doubt, pregnant. I’ve never seen such a positive test before.”

They were elated. Tears escaped the corner of their eyes.

A week before Christmas, they told her parents. They were so happy and congratulated the young lady and their son-in-law.

The next week, they went to his parent’s place in a neighboring state for Christmas and gave them a onesie as a Christmas gift. The house almost collapsed from the jumping that took place.

There were a lot of things that took place during that pregnancy. They quit their jobs, moved to a different state, got new jobs, bought a house, and had many trials come their way. There were many tears shed; many prayers prayed.

On August 17, they went to the hospital, and she agonized in labor for thirty-six hours.

But eventually, a little boy was born, and their love for each other and that baby multiplied. He was so precious. They realized that they would give their lives for this child. They would pour themselves into every aspect of his existence. They would nurture and provide for him.

She navigated the ins and outs of motherhood, and he learned how to be a dad.

And they’re still learning.

And today, when that little boy woke up at 7:30 AM, he went into the living room to where his Dad sat on the couch.

“Hey, good morning, son. Do you want to pray with me?” his father asked.

The boy smiled big, “Daddy, it’s my birthday.”

“That’s right! Are you ready for your party?”

“YES!” The boy jumped up and down.

His dad pulled him into a big bear hug. “Happy Birthday, Son #1. I love you.”

“I love you, too, Daddy.”

to my firstborn,
– Caleb
