The Prayers

One of my goals as a Dad is to lead my children to Christ. Part of that includes teaching them to pray.

We’re encouraged when they ask us to pray for them, which means they believe prayer works. But even better than that is when they start praying on their own accord.

The boys have been sick all week. They are feeling rough. And when children are sick, the parents feel it, especially the mom. Sickness means sleepless, restless nights. Our children get rowdier and more energetic when they get sick. So they’ve been feeling tired and putting on their less-than-stellar attitudes.

We were at a church service tonight, and at the end, when we all went to the altar to pray, Son #1 started praying loudly. I almost told him to tone it down a bit but decided against it.

He was saying, “God, please take away my sickness!”

He repeated that so many times. It’s the only way he knew to ask for healing.

Then he laid his hand on my back and started praying for me.

And I’ll tell you, tears flowed down my face.

I can’t think of anything more precious than to hear my four-year-old pray for me.

I was close to him and heard every word. And I was moved with compassion for my son. But all I can do is give him children’s cold and flu medicine.

I believe God was closer, heard every word, and His heart overflowed with compassion for His child.

And I expect that an answer is on the way that doesn’t include children’s Tylenol.

to my boys,
– Caleb
