Not having a central cooling system in the house is odd. Our A/C went out last week.
We have three window units going, and they run constantly. Normally, we keep the house at a balmy seventy-two degrees. The central air conditioning was the best. Whenever we did crank it down, it would freeze a person out of the house. The same goes for the heating during the winter. Our unit used natural gas in the winter. It would get rather toasty. We loved it.
The cost of our electricity to run the unit wasn’t too bad. The only bad thing about our bill was when the city got behind because the new meter reader didn’t know how to do his job and got behind on the readings. Bless his little heart.
There was one month when we thought we had done an excellent job at keeping our bill low, but then later on, we realized that the city didn’t charge us for the electricity used, then they put it all on one bill, and we were charged for two months instead of one.
Our town installed a field of solar panels to offset the cost of fossil-fueled electricity, yet what they charge went up exponentially. Hopefully, once the townsfolk finish paying off the solar panels, the price of electricity will go down again. I don’t know if running the outside unit costs more than running the windows units. We’ll find out.
Meanwhile, we are waiting for our insurance to contact us about our A/C unit. We believe it was a lightning strike. Once they contact us, we should get the ball rolling.
But until then, we’ll run these window units and utilize that field of solar panels.
On the one hand, we hope for sunny days ahead. But on the other hand, we hope there will be cloudy skies and cooler weather. But we don’t want it too cool just yet.
These window units don’t have heaters inside them.
Oh, the perils of living in the U.S.A.
A modern-day hero is a person who is proficient in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. They deserve their own dedicated comic book series.
