The Water Walker

We were at the lake recently, and the subject of Jesus Christ came up.

Son #1: “Hey, guys. Let’s play a game.”

Us: “What kind of game?”

Him: “I want to walk on water. You know, like Jesus did.”

Us: “Well, good luck with that, buddy.”

Jesus had no other way to go across the lake, so He improvised. He might’ve been wanting to showcase His power, but I think the act came more from a necessity than anything else. There’s a lake, no boat, and it’s late at night. I would’ve walked across the water instead of going all the way around, too.

No, I don’t believe that last paragraph to be an absolute fact. No, I haven’t taken a deep dive into why He did. And no, I am not willing to defend my reasoning.

All I know is I tried to walk across the water as a young boy, too.

We would stand on the deck beside the pool or on the dock stretching out into the lake and run as fast as we could.

When we reached the end of solid footing and the beginning of the water’s edge, we’d put our legs into sixth gear and do our dead-level best to make it several feet over the water before sinking. Our hopes and dreams sunk along with our skinny frames into the inky blackness of the North Fork Lake.

But you can rest assured that one of the first things I’m going to try to do when I reach the Pearly Gates is head toward the Crystal Sea and take off running as fast as I can.

to the boyhood dreams,
– Caleb
