The Seasons

I don’t know who needs to know this, but it isn’t autumn yet.

Sure, the air is changing, and the crisp tinge of Fall is an undertone, especially in the early morning hours, but it isn’t Fall yet.

Fall doesn’t begin until September 23, 2023. Before you get too out of control, let’s just put those sweaters back in the closet, the decor back in the plastic tote, and the choking scent of spiced cider and pumpkin pie mixed with falling leaves back on the store shelves.

It’s just too much, my friends.

My great-grandmother told her son, my grandpa, Lloyd Eugene, in the Spring of the year to keep a lookout for a good-looking cedar tree for Christmas. So he would keep one eye out and one eye in. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Anyway, he would find the perfect tree and watch it all year long.

Exactly one week before Christmas, she would say, “Okay, Jim.” No, his name is not Jim, but we call him Jim for some reason. I don’t know why. “Okay, Jim. It’s time to chop down the Christmas tree.”

He would grab an axe and travel to that special tree he had picked out and drag it back to the house.

Once he got to the house, it was too big to stand in the living room. So they would start trimming it. They would get it down to size, and for one whole week, they would enjoy the splendor of Christmas decor. Now, they kept Christmas in their heart all year long, and let it out onto the house around them when it was time.

Of course, that was more than half a century ago in rural Missouri. Nowadays, things are a tad different. We have instant access to whatever we want, and we can click a button and have all the things our hearts desire.

However, I must state that this Saturday is the one-week mark — one week until autumn is upon us.

Yet there are fall decorations galore upon the porches and doors of houses all around the neighborhoods.

I think it would behoove us to wait two more days.

Let’s let the Summer season have its time. Please don’t rush Summer out the back door as Fall walks up the sidewalk.

It’s still warm, and the air conditioners are still pushing out the cool air in the afternoon hours.

So, let’s keep calm and step away from the fall decor.

to summer,
– Caleb
