The Vow

Do you know how many days there are in 68 years? 24,820.

Hours? 595,680.

Minutes? 35,740,800

Seconds? My calculator just melted.

I contend that marriage is sacred. Not many think so nowadays. In addition to divorce, adultery is rampant and affects many people in the present day, as it has throughout history.

Three words of an old-time marriage vow say, “I take thee.” After those three words, you say the name of the person standing opposite you, the bride or the groom.

I grasp a hold of and cling to you.

Whenever I spoke those words at my wedding, I did not include any other names. I said, “I take thee, Charity.”

I want you. Only you.

Sixty-eight years ago, in 1955, two people stood at an altar in the First Church of God and made an oath to each other that they would take, hold, and cherish each other until they parted by way of death.

And so far, the vow has stood firm.

Have there been hard times? Too many to count.

Could they have walked away from their commitments? Yeah.

Did they? No.

Have they always done everything right? Doubtful.

It’s getting up every day and choosing each other. It’s choosing to stay no matter how rough the road gets.

Sixty-eight years later, Jim and Delores are still holding onto each other. And that, my friends, is what I would call true success.

to my grandparents,
