The Firm

Our boys were sick recently. They demanded to sleep in our bed, which is not a common thing. We let them one other time. But it is not something we allow unless they are very ill.

Why is that? Well, we bought a king-size bed because I am a large person and need the room, not because I wanted to be kicked in the teeth at 3:07 a.m.

That’s a specific time because it was a specific incident that happened.

Immediately following the involuntary dental reconstruction, I received a roundhouse kick to the throat.

It was then that I decided to exit the bedroom. I’ve never been a fan of the MMA, and I wasn’t going to start at 3:07 in the morning.

So, recently, when the boys demanded to either sleep in the king-size bed or reenact the story of Gulliver’s Travels, I went to the living room.

I like a firm mattress. But I never realized how firm a mattress I like until recently. I walked into the living room and remembered that Son #1 had puked on the couch, so I lay on the floor. We were having the cushions cleaned.

It turns out that I prefer a mattress to be the firmness of a board with a covering of thin, mostly frayed carpet.

A mattress that is soft and fluffy is the worst. We used to have one of those, but after years of waking up with headaches and a stiff lower back, I realized I couldn’t deal with layers upon layers of foam.

So, after spending the night on our very firm floor, I woke up feeling the most rested I had in a long time. It was wonderful.

The next mattress we purchase may have to somehow incorporate a slab of granite on one side.

to anyone partial to the floor,
