I was mesmerized by this song the first time I heard it. It was on Janet Paschal’s Christmas CD from the early 2000s. She had a full orchestra and an actual ability to sing. I have a guitar with year-old strings and no talent whatsoever.
What I do have is guts, apparently. That’s what it takes to record oneself and plaster it on the internet for everyone and their brother to cringe at. And that’s okay because self-deprecating humor is my love language. It can’t get more self-deprecating than this.
The next time I heard the song, it was being expertly vocalized by the incomparable Carpenters. Karen outdid herself on that entire record. It’s one of my top five favorite Christmas albums. Merry Christmas, Darling, and There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays are a requirement for the holidays.
Then, there’s Andy Williams. All I know is he sings Moon River and every Christmas song to ever exist. Or it feels like it, at least. He put a twist on the Christmas Waltz. It isn’t my favorite version, but it’s alright. All in all, It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year when his voice hits the holiday airwaves.
Tonight’s butchered version of The Christmas Waltz, sung by Yours Truly, is live and out of tune for your listening amusement and displeasure.
“Frosted windowpanes, Candles gleaming inside, painted candy canes on the tree. Santa’s on his way. He’s filled his sleigh with things for you and for me.
“It’s that time of the year when the world falls in love. Every song you hear seems to say, ‘Merry Christmas, may your New Year dreams come true.’
“And this song of mine, in three-quarter time, wishes you and yours the same thing, too.”
And, just like that, it’s officially the Christmas Season.
